Advice for Retired Accountants Who Want to Work
Advice for Retired Accountants Who Want to WorkAdvice for Retired Accountants Who Want to WorkAs you near retirement age, you may find yourself at something of a crossroads. Youll be glad to say goodbye to 50-plus-hour weeks, but youre not ready for your accounting career to come to a screeching halt. What are retired accountants to do?You want something that makes use of your abilities, appeals to your interests and is flexible enough to match a more relaxed lifestyle. Meeting new people and learning new things would be nice, too. You may also need to keep earning to supplement your IRA or 401(k) savings, or youre facing financial challenges.Depending on your age and situation, make sure youve considered any tax and Social Security consequences. Then, whatever your reasons for wanting to keep working, take a look at all the choices for so-called retired accountants in a very welcoming job market. Here are eight to consider1. Temporary accounting workRetirees have long enjoyed season al work, as it tops up their income without tying them down with a year-round commitment. An obvious way for retired accountants to land a seasonal job is to sign up with a tax preparation company. A staffing agency specializing in accounting can also help you find seasonal work, such as helping organizations with year-end closing. But it doesnt have to be seasonal. Temporary and part-time accounting jobs are an increasingly attractive option in todays labor?market. Its a myth that temp work is just for entry-level positions. You can find work ranging from part-time bookkeeping help for a growing company to interim management duties for a CFO on leave, and from short-term work to temp-to-hire situations, where a part-time position becomes full time.WORK WITH US2. Consulting gigsConsulting positions offer a great way to ease into retirement. Many organizations, especially small and midsize businesses, are eager for the guidance of an experienced accountant. If you offer an attractive portfolio of services, such as tax advising and preparation, you can quickly build a book of clients you can work with on a zu gunsten vonject basis. You also get to give back to the local economy by helping freelancers and entrepreneurs build their budding businesses.3. In-person teachingYour professional knowledge is a priceless resource. If you have good communication skills and enjoy spending time with people, look for part-time teaching positions at a local four-year or community college. There are also plenty of independent, for-profit organizations that arrange training programs for businesses. And dont forget tutoring. To get matched up with students who need extra help with math, finance or economics, advertise your services on Craigslist or with a schools academic advising office.4. Teaching angeschlossenAs a seasoned professional, youre familiar with webinars and online tutorials. What if you were on the other side of the screen? Platforms such as Skillshare and Lynda.com allow you to create video training courses, which are then available to their subscribers. Each time someone watches your lesson, you get a commission. One of the best parts about this job for a retired accountant is the passive income You do the work once but earn money each time the video is viewed.5. Monetization of a hobbyWhatever youre passionate about - whether be it cooking, travel, arts and crafts, music or model trains - its now easier than ever to build a business around it, thanks to the internet. Your financial savvy gives you an extra edge. Even if you dont make a huge income from selling your products or services, you still get to spend time on your favorite pursuits.6. Academic researchAccountants have the skills to be excellent researchers patience, attention to detail and a way with numbers. Theres a demand for researchers in many areas of academia, not just accounting and finance, to sift through files, gather data, organize information and archive records. To g et started, dig through the names in your professional network to see who you know at nearby universities. They might be able to connect you with stimulating and rewarding projects.7. Grant writing and administrationHelp a company or nonprofit put together grant applications. Then, if the organizations proposal is funded, you could help them disperse funds, track expenses and create year-end reports. This part-time retirement job is a good way to use your abilities in project management, tax legislation, payroll, bookkeeping and interdepartmental collaboration. Keep in mind that the bigger the grant you receive, the more hours you may have to put into the role8. Unique rewards of volunteerismIf you have a comfortable nest egg and dont need to make money on the side, consider working pro bono. You can find volunteer accounting work in virtually any field that requires money to operate. Opportunities range from balancing the books at the local dog shelter to serving as treasurer for a neighborhood associations fundraiser. With so many nonprofits not being able to afford an accountants salary, former finance professionals can stay busy during retirement by volunteering their services. For many retirees, working in retirement is becoming a new stage in their career progression thats seen as a choice rather than a burden. Because you no longer have the pressure of building a career, you can be choosy with retirement jobs. Explore your options and make the most of this exciting time in your life.

A Prescription to Increase Productivity and Employee Morale
A Prescription to Increase Productivity and Employee MoraleA Prescription to Increase Productivity and Employee MoraleA Prescription to Increase Productivity and Employee Morale Blaszczyk, Managing Editor, Resource CenterWhat is organizational health? And why is it so essential to business success?Best-selling author Patrick Lencioni, whose books have included The Five Dysfunctions of a Team, says that it surpasses all other disciplines in business as the greatest opportunity for improvement and competitive advantage. With that in mind, we spoke with Lencioni about how large companies cangenerate organizational health.Monster Your book, The Advantage, emphasizes the importance of organizational health via leadership, gruppework, corporate culture, strategy and meetings. Why are behauptung things so often overlooked in companies?Lencioni geschftsleben schools and the media tend to focus on what I call the smart side of business. These are the fundamentals of business and include areas s uch as strategy, marketing, finance, technology and other decision sciences. However, being smart is only half of the equation. The healthy side of business, outlined in The Advantage, is often overlooked.Healthy organizations have minimal politics and confusion, high degrees of morale and productivity, and low turnover among employees. Many leaders shy away from health becauseThey dont see health as a real advantageThey dont want to take the time to work on health andHealth is difficult to quantify.Monster You emphasize four disciplines for organizational health, three of which focus on clarity. Why is clarity so important?Lencioni When I work with clients, we spend over half of our time together on clarity. Without it, silos develop, politics creep in and the organization falters.Developing clarity is not a onetime event. Once it is established, it must be communicated and reinforced continuously.MonsterThe third discipline, Over-communicate clarity, is a means of increasing produc tivity and employee morale. How can often-repeated messages stay fresh and meaningful?Lencioni Vary the medium and delivery of the message. And, keep in mind, employees would rather have consistent messaging than messages that are fresh. Some studies say that employees need to hear something seven times before they believe it.Monster What are four disciplines? How does the process work?Lencioni An organization doesnt become healthy in a linear, tidy fashion. Like building a strong marriage or family, its a messy process that involves doing a few things at once, and it must be maintained on an ongoing fundament in order to be preserved. Still, that messy process can be broken down into four simple steps or disciplines1. Build a Cohesive Leadership Team The first is all about getting the leaders of the organization to behave in a functional, cohesive way.If the people responsible for running an organization, whether that organization is a corporation, a department within that corporatio n, a start-up company, a restaurant, a school or a church, are behaving in dysfunctional ways, then that dysfunction will cascade into the rest of the organization and prevent organizational health. And yes, there are concrete steps a leadership team can take to prevent this.2. Create Clarity The second step for building a healthy organization is ensuring that the members of that leadership team are intellectually aligned around six simple but critical questions see these below. On topics ranging from why the organization exists to what its most important priority is for the next few months, leaders must eliminate any gaps that may exist between them, so that people one, two or three levels below have complete clarity about what they should do to make the organization successful.3. Over-Communicate Clarity Only after these first two steps are in process (behavioral and intellectual alignment) can an organization undertake the third step over-communicating the answers to the six quest ions.Leaders of a healthy organization constantly and I mean constantly repeat themselves and reinforce what is true and important. They always err on the side of saying too much, rather than too little. This quality alone sets leaders of healthy organizations apart from others.4. Reinforce ClarityFinally, in addition to over-communicating, leaders must ensure that the answers to the six critical questions are reinforced repeatedly using simple human systems. That means any process that involves people, from hiring and firing to performance management and decision-making, is designed in a custom way to intentionally support and emphasize the uniqueness of the organization.MonsterYou write about the importance of a cohesive leadership team. What motivates people to form a real team?Lencioni Oftentimes, people are motivated to become part of a real team because they are not getting the results they want or need. They are not getting traction and dont know why. Often, they have a hunch i ssues on the team are blocking their success.Monster Can it be meaningfully fostered by financial reward?Financial reward should not be the driver for forming a cohesive team, but can help perpetuate the team ethic once established.LencioniIf a team is committed to each other and a common objective, a good portion of their compensation or reward structure, though not necessarily all of it, should be based on the achievement of that common objective.Monster Your 2002 book, The Five Dysfunctions of a Team, continues to be national bestseller. Is your hope that The Advantage will address these ongoing issues once and for all?Lencioni Is that even a remote possibility, given the tendencies of human nature?Yes, looking at the healthy side of business, whether the topic is teams or the organization, is messy. But just like marriage or parenting, some of the most rewarding pursuits in life are ongoing, never perfect. The key is to stick to a simple set of principles, learn from your missteps and have the discipline to keep going. The six critical questions areWhy do we exist? The answer to this question will yield a core purpose, or the fundamental reason the company is in business. How do we behave? This question examines behaviors and values required for success. What do we do? This answer provides a simple, direct explanation of the business. How will we succeed? This question requires the team members to develop a strategy. What is most important, right now? The answer to this question is the establishment of a unifying thematic goal and action plan.Who must do what? This question addresses roles and responsibilities.Read more from Patrick Lencioni Cultivate a Healthy Business Culture for your Small BusinessAuthor BioPatrick Lencioni is a best-selling author, speaker and consultant with over two decades of experience working with CEOs and their executive teams. Does most of your paycheck go to rent That may be hurting your health
Does most of your paycheck go to rent That may be hurting your healthDoes most of your paycheck go to rent That may be hurting your healthNew data on health across the U.S. shows that high housing costs are harming Americans health and that some communities are affected mora than others. The 2019 County Health Rankings, an annual collaborative report from the University of Wisconsin Population Health Institute and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, shows that 11 percent of U.S. households are severely burdened by housing costs. This means that more than 800,000 households spend at least half of their income on housing.Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moreIn communities with high housing costs, residents rate their health as lower, are less likely to be able to purchase enough quality and nutritious foods, and have higher rates of child poverty. As a health researcher, this is a theme that I have seen in studies over and over again. The most burdened householdsWhile many communities face high housing costs, these burdens are elend universally shared. Renters are more likely than homeowners to spend more than half of their paycheck on housing. The costs of homeownership have improved over the past few years, but housing costs for renters have bedrngnis. There are also racial differences. More than 1 in 10 white households spend more than half of their income on housing, with a median income of US$56,000. But among households headed by blacks, the median income is $33,000 and about 1 in 4 black households experience these housing costs burdens.Another key finding from the County Health Rankings report is that segregated communities with more households headed by black residents are twice as likely to face severe housing cost burdens than white households. Why are black Americans more likely to spend so much of their incomes on housing? One reason is that black neigh borhoods were targeted in a process called redlining, especially between the 1930s and 1965. Banks and other lenders excluded black communities from favorable loans and charged higher interest rates on mortgages, leading to higher housing costs even when homes were valued less than similar homes in white communities.Redlining is not explicitly practiced in the same way today, but its damage and discrimination remains such as how banks targeted black homeowners with subprime loans. The consequences of this became clear in the 2008 recession, when black homeowners suffered worse outcomes compared to white homeowners. These practices led to higher foreclosure rates and steeper declines in home values during and after the recession, limiting opportunities for black communities to build wealth through homeownership.Effects on healthThere is a powerful relationship between housing and health. When people pay too much for housing, they must make tough choices between paying their rent or mortgage or paying for food, medicine and other resources that support their health. In 2015, households that are burdened by housing costs spent 53 percent less on health care, food and transportation combined, compared to households that do not spend more than half of their income on housing. To afford housing, some families spend less on food, do not buy enough food, or buy less nutritious and cheaper food. These families may also live in homes with structural deficits and other inadequacies, where they are at higher risk for health conditions like lead paint poisoning and asthma.Research shows that segregated communities are more likely to be exposed to more threats to their health. For example, a study published in March showed that black and Hispanic populations are exposed to 56 percent and 63 percent more air pollution compared to white residents, even though white residents are more likely to contribute to pollution.Segregated communities are also less likely to have resourc es in their communities that promote health and help prevent chronic diseases, like obesity and diabetes. Even if black families were not overly burdened by housing costs, they still are more likely to need to leave their own neighborhoods to access fresh and nutritious foods, quality health care services and places to exercise. And black residents living in segregated neighborhoods are also more likely to die prematurely.I recently co-authored a paper, led by University of Maryland professor Caryn Bell, that shows that counties with 9 percent or more black residents are more likely to have resources that compromise health, such as um ein haar food restaurants, and less likely to have resources that promote health, such as grocery stores. Research has shown that this is important, due to the relationship between access to health-promoting resources, like grocery stores, and lower obesity rates.A growing problemAs housing costs have risen, incomes have not kept pace. Additionally, aff ordable housing is not available to everyone who needs it.The National Low Income Housing Coalition reported in March that only 37 affordable homes exist for every 100 extremely low-income renter households, meaning households with incomes at or below the poverty line or 30 percent of the area median income. That means that there is a shortage of homes with monthly costs that are 30 percent or less of the monthly households income. No state has enough homes for every extremely low-income renter household, which are the majority of households that are severely housing cost burdened.Incomes are stagnating while housing costs, especially renting, continue to rise. As these two forces combine to limit opportunity, more U.S. residents are at risk of becoming burdened by their housing costs and damaging their health, especially low-income and black Americans.Jessica Owens-Young, Assistant Professor of Health Studies, American UniversityThis article is republished from The Conversation und er a Creative Commons license. Tons of resumes but still no calls Send this instead.
Tons of resumes but still no calls Send this instead.Tons of resumes but still no calls Send this instead.Let me set the scene you have job applications everywhere, are going nuts sending out resumes, but despite your decades of experience, you can barely seem to get even ONE call back. Before you get mora frustrated, discouraged, and closer to losing your sanity with each passing day, Im going to map out what you need to send people so you can start to make some headway in your job search, and ultimately earn what youre really and truly worth.First though, we need to begin with a healthy dose of truth.I need to be real with you about something I love it when the candidates I untersttzung get calls for the roles they want, advance through the interview process, and land the offers with compensation packages they deserve. Ive guided nearly 500 candidates through this successfully, and about 3 dozen of them talked about their path to success in the recommendations on my LinkedIn profile .But I hate it when candidates initially come to me saying all theyve run into so far is going online, filling out applications, then getting countless junk emails for no-commission sales roles, positions that are out of state, or opportunities to be Uber and Lyft drivers.Im going to lay out some hard facts job boards give you a 1-2% chance of landing an interview period.com. And that means EVERY job board, not just Monster, CareerBuilder, and Indeed, but also any of the job boards that say they cater to executives, as well as those niche job boards in your industry that you spent so much time searching for. However, what makes or breaks job search success is your ability to make direct contact with the relevant decision maker. 40-70% of people get hired this way. Thats exactly how I want to see you get hired, too. Now, guess what ESPECIALLY if youre near or over the age of 50, now is the time for you to make a mindset shift.Heres the key to catapulting yourself into the 40-70% succ ess rate.Your change in mindset needs to be immediately followed by a change in action. Most candidates get stuck in this cycle of either no responses or poor, mismatched responses because they dont make changes in what theyre doing during the course of the job search. Now, lets talk about what it takes to get the attention of the decision maker. I call this Job Search 1-2-31)Use the job boards, but ONLY to find out which employers are hiring right now.2)Conduct a LinkedIn advanced search to identify people who could be relevant to your search. Their titles will likely resemble, human resources, talent acquisition, or theyll be the functional decision maker in your area of expertise.3)Write a message or InMail to each relevant person, saying thisI just came across the posting for XYZ position. The job ID is ABC1234.My expertise in A, B, and C constitutes a strong match, and Im confident I can deliver immediate impact by how you can help the team, NOT how the job is a great fit for yo u.Do you have 5 minutes to get on the phone this week? (xxx.xxx.xxxx) Id certainly appreciate mora insight so as to not get lost in the masses. This is very short and to the point. Youre no longer in the tsunami of resumes coming from all your competitors. Instead, especially if you message the person through LinkedIn, youre separating yourself out because the second they receive your message, then can click on your profile to see how your skills match.Dont think it will work? Hmmm, what youve been doing doesnt work.Send the message. The relevant people dont want to go through thousands of resumes. They want a candidate who clearly articulates their value and cares about what their company is doing. So raise your hand you need to be that candidate.Im confident youll get a higher rate of response. This email works time and again. For more job search training on how to get responses, make it to good interviews, and hear offers that you actually want, join us for5 Secrets Smart Jobseeke rs Age 50+ Know That Make The Job Search EASY

How To Make The Age of Your Resume Anonymous
How To Make The Age of Your Resume AnonymousHow To Make The Age of Your Resume AnonymousAt Simply Hired, we know you need a good, up to date, snazzy resume no matter what stage youre at in your career. As a savvy, career-minded adult, you know that too, along with the fact that a killer resume can help you advance into new and exciting positions, regardless of whether youre looking presently. With the advent of recruiters, headhunters, and specialty firms being paid to hunt down the best talent possible, having a resume on hand is, well, handy. Why is it then that most active professionals maintain resumes that, lets face it, are dated? If its been more than a decade since you busted out your dance shoes for prom, for example, its probably well past time that you left off that high school job at the local ice cream stand. Similarly, the further you advance in your career the less relevant it becomes that at one point you score big at the state track field meet.Accomplishments and wor k history are great to include, but they can also age and date your resume both in biographical terms and applicability to your current position. When youre out to make the most of your career, neither is desirable. Its never too late to teach an old dog new tricks, as the saying goes, and likewise elend impossible to freshen up and make the age of your resume anonymous to would be employers. Remove Your AgeStep number one should be obvious, but it bears pointing out that your physical age should stay far, far, away from your resume. Any mention of birthdate on its face should be carefully excised. Not only does this date your resume, but it could place potential employers in an awkward spot. Thanks to antidiscrimination laws, employers arent allowed to use age as a factor when making hiring choices. So skip the personal information and save your birthday celebrations for personal friends and family. Make Employment History RelevantIf youve got a long and storied employment record, congratulations. Chances are, however, that your first job (or three) right out of high school or college probably isnt reflective of your current capabilities. Peruse your resume for old or irrelevant jobs and remove them entirely to avoid dating both yourself and your skills. Structure Your Resume or CV CorrectlyYouve probably changed quite a bit in the last 20 years and the saatkorn can be said for the state of resumes. While a classic CV tends to avoid modern trends, best practices do shift over an extended period of time. Failing to keep your resume in line with what everyone else is submitting can leave your candidacy looking dated. If its been some time since youve given the document a spruce up, consider downloading a modern template for a fresh and ageless look. Focus on Your Current SkillsWhether in love, life or a professional career, living in the past typically isnt going to get you very far. If youre looking to appear relevant and impress potential employers, focus on your current skillset. Typing 60 wpm may have been a big deal when most people didnt have access to a keyboard, but employers nowadays would rather hear about your web development skills or expert efficiency certifications. Leave off the outdated abilities and focus on your current strengths in order to keep your resume looking fresh. Emphasize Personal StrengthsLast but not least, if youre worried that age may be of concern to a potential employer try using your years of experience to your advantage. A long history in a given field can be a huge plus in the workplace. Draw attention to this fact by putting personal and professional strengths first and foremost. If you have the room, consider inserting a resume objective to kick things off that promotes you as an experienced, knowledgeable and seasoned professional in your field.
